New Alabama State Law Means More Citations

A new Alabama state law is being introduced which will mean more tickets being written at traffic accidents.

Under the present law, an officer can only write a ticket if he or she actually saw the violation take place, apart from in the case of a DUI. However, beginning on August 1, officers can write citations for traffic violations such as running a red light, following too close, failure to yield a right- of way or others even if they did not actually see what happened.

The officers will need evidence to write the citations but it does give them the opportunity to hold drivers more responsible. The driver does of course have the option to disagree with the officer and go to court to plead their case.

Obviously more citations will mean more revenue for the state but it is emphasized that the rationale behind it is driver safety and less accidents. Those who have citations will have points attributed to their driver’s license. ”
