Physical Therapist Killed in Accident

In the early hours of the morning of Saturday, September 19, a physical therapist from Trussville, Birmingham was killed in an accident.

According to the Metro Homicide Unit, the accident happened on the I-359 Southbound at I20/59 when an SUV crashed in to the on ramp’s guardrail causing it to flip over and it then landed on the roof. Catherine Virgona, aged 23, who was not wearing a seat belt was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 22 year old driver suffered undisclosed injuries and was taken to DCH for treatment, but later released.

No other vehicles were involved and the crash remains under investigation by the Metro Homicide Unit and the TPD Accident Reconstruction Unit. The 22 year old driver, whose name has not been released, could face several charges including reckless driving.

Virgona is the third person to die from John Carroll High School in recent weeks.

Northport Woman is Killed in a Fatal Car Crash

On Tuesday afternoon, August 4, a Northport woman was killed in a fatal car crash.

According to Alabama State Troopers the accident happened on Highway 43, 15 miles north of Northport in Tuscaloosa County at just after 2.45 p.m. in the afternoon. They went on to say that 45 year old Tonya Michelle Jones of the New Lexington community was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus on Highway 43 and she collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe being driven by 35 year old Peggy Sue Woolbright. The reasons for the collision are not yet known. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene and Woolbright, of Berry, Alabama was transported to the University of Alabama, Birmingham hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Jones is survived by three sons and a daughter.

Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the accident and its cause.
