How to Avoid a Single Vehicle Accident

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, around 25% of all road vehicle related fatalities involved just one single vehicle and the majority are due to over corrections following a lack of concentration when the vehicle drifts out of its lane or onto the pavement.

Over correcting due to a panic situation almost always causes the vehicle to spin, or flip over, or go into oncoming traffic. If the driver stays calm and corrects the vehicle properly without over correcting it is unlikely there will be an accident.

Should it happen to you, that you find two wheels have left the road and have gone onto a pavement or a verge, take your foot of the gas pedal, keep the steering wheel straight and allow the vehicle to slow by itself. Once it has slowed then carefully and gently steer back onto the road.

It is best not to use the brake, but if you have ABS and you need to brake urgently to avoid an accident then you can use it but remember to ensure the steering wheel is straight before hitting the brake pedal and before releasing it too.
